The Windows operating system sometimes likes to try and install its own drivers for products, which can interfere with the installation of the correct drivers. In earlier Windows versions, the operating system will ask you whether or not you want to try and install it by default. Unfortunately this isn't necessarily the case for Windows Vista or 7, so connecting the driver will immediately start Windows installing some generic driver. So what do you do combat this? The trick is to not connect the Helix Board or Firefly before running the installation. Instead, start the setup.exe and follow the installation instructions.
You can connect the unit via FireWire or USB during this, but do not turn the unit on. When you're asked by the software to disconnect and reconnect the unit, at this point turn the unit on. If you've previously installed the driver and the unit wasn't recognized, you will need to completely uninstall the installed driver and restart your computer before trying again without connecting the board first. In addition to this, please make sure the FireWire cable or USB cable you are using is working correctly, and be sure that your FireWire card's drivers are up-to-date. This, and a total Windows update can be vital to ensuring your unit will install correctly. Also, be sure that the driver you are installing is the correct one for your model. Using an incorrect driver will stop the unit from being recognized in the installation.
